Coordinator Planning Compliance

  • Salary Range Band 8 $125,104 - $140,199 plus 11.5% super 
  • Temporary Full Time/Part Time (12 month fixed term maternity leave cover)

What’s the role all about 

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced leader to join the City of Port Phillip in a fixed term maternity leave position until August 2025. Reporting directly to the Manager Safety & Amenity, in this demanding leadership role you will be responsible for the management of our busy Planning Compliance unit.  To be successful in this position you will demonstrate extensive leadership experience in a regulatory or planning field, strong planning knowledge and a track record of managing complex and sensitive enforcement matters through to resolution in an operational environment. 

You should be highly regarded for your “can do” attitude and will need high level judgement, decision making and communication skills. This role also requires continued leadership and support of several ongoing initiatives including the Customer Transformation program, OH&S, team culture and performance.

While this role is a critical role to the organisation, we are looking for the perfect candidate that can come into the role and excel, so with that in mind we would be open to reviewing applications from candidates that are looking for Part time of four days (30.4 hours) in addition to full time applications.  

What you might do 

  • Manage the day to day operations of a proactive and responsive Planning Compliance service.
  • Coordinate and oversee enforcement activities of the unit to ensure Council’s statutory obligations are effectively and efficiently administered.
  • Lead, motivate and develop staff to succeed in a busy regulatory environment.
  • Build strong relationships across the organisation and with external stakeholders to assist in the delivery of Council’s Plan and strategic initiatives by ensuring land use and development is lawful.

Who we are looking for 

  • A relevant degree or diploma qualification in Statutory Planning, Planning Law or equivalent (highly desirable) with several years relevant experience or lesser formal qualifications with extensive and diverse experience leading regulatory or planning teams, preferably in a Government environment.
  • Demonstrated broad technical knowledge of planning legislation and planning law combined with strong experience in law enforcement actions and procedures in a government context.
  • High level problem solving, investigative and analytical skills, and a track record in developing solutions to planning enforcement issues in a complex operating environment, utilising highly developed written and advanced verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and motivating teams, fostering a positive workplace culture, developing people and encouragement of quality conversations and feedback on performance through a planned performance review and appraisal process.
  • Demonstrated considerable experience in managing investigations that have proceeded to the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and/or Magistrates’ Court and ability to prepare Council reports, briefings or Councillor notes on matters the unit is responsible for.
